Roberto Ayala Retires

Roberto Ayala yesterday called time on his career as a professional footballer, ending back in his home country with club 'Racing Club'.

Ayala had a long illustrious career that dated by to the late nineties and had previously plied his trade with Real Zaragoza & Valencia, both of Spain.

Ayala featured in Spain for 15 seasons, mostly with Valencia, and had more than 100 caps for the Spanish giants. Ayala also scored 15 goals in his career, considerably high for a defender. During his career with Valencia, he won the La Liga title 2 times in 3 years and he was influential in their Champions League campaign of 2000/01 as he guided them to the final, eventually losing out to rivals Real Madrid on penalties.

Ayala was seen as one of the best central defenders the world back in the early 2000's and had cemented his place with the Argentine national team. He went on to play 23 games for Argentina, a massive understatement considering his talent.
